First weekend of October and no time for pictures. Approx. 9am small taylor blues blitz the beach at mile marker 7 and we catch enough for supper and just throw the rest back with 5 inch hopkins on 14lb line and 7 foot poles. Remember this for later!!! Approx 11am Spanish Mackrel hit the beach in the 22 to 25 inch range. Four of us in the camper 15 a piece the cooler is full we followed them to mile 5b and threw the rest back. Decided to take a beer break and noticed large pelicans diving, ran down and threw in with a puppy drum slamming the hopkins 32 inch. All of a sudden the water turned RED I mean RED!!!! Large citiation size drum were blitzing the beach and running everything up on the beach even flounder..... They were jumping out of the water!! We began casting the hopkins and would hook up instantly. Caught 8 citations with remember the 7ft poles and 14lb line, needless to say it took a while to getum in. Also almost 85 drum between us 4 in the camper and my dad who had three people with him all throwing hopkins. We followed the fish from 5b to 17 on FOOT!!!! The ranger was even following us measuring fish. What I couldnt believe is we passed some people not many were on the island and they didnt fall in with us. They just let the blitz go by and picked up whatever hit there bottom poles. Ive been to Portsmouth for 20 years and live here and have never seen anything like this. You tried to find the big fish in the water and try to throw to them so the smaller 30 inch drum wouldnt get it.. All fish released alive and quickly!!!
Awesome trip and I will have to say the Red Drum Bums will have to buy new citation stickers for the truck!!!!!!!

I had the best time of my life with my family at Portsmouth Island on September 29, 2009. My family and I was 4 miles south of our cabin fishing for Red Drum with cut up Blue Fish as our bait. We had been fishing all day catching lots of fish, when all of a sudden a fish grabbed my hook and took off. When I finally reeled him in, it took my father and my two uncles to drag the fish out of the water. I had hooked him in the mouth and in the tail which had made it harder to reel in. He was 45 lbs and 43 inches long. Below is a picture of me with the fish and also a picture of my cousin Noah laying beside the monster Drum.

LISTEN TO THE PORTSMOUTH ISLAND SONG WRITTEN BY TERRY SHEA
This site is a labor of love. For those of you who frequent Portsmouth Island, you know what we mean. Those who have never been to the island? Well, this site can only give you a snapshot of the fun and relaxed atmosphere that exists on the North Core Banks.
Paradise Found is the best way to describe Portsmouth Island!!!!!
For us, it all starts with the most delicious bacon, egg & cheese sandwich known to man, cooked to order at the Marina grill while we await our turn on the early ferry. Then there's the anticipation as Kari and Anne fill us in on the latest fishing reports. "Big drum on the North Point!" The ferry can't leave fast enough. We load up and, as we cross the sound, we marvel at the incredible scenery and discuss this year's fishing strategy like we were preparing for the Super Bowl. Some of us crack open the week's first Budweiser, even though it's only 7:20 in the morning. Finally, we get to the dock, unload, unpack, pack the bait, beer and food coolers with more ice, take air out of the tires, switch to 4WD and head out.....
